Death Therapy – Self Mind Dead

De allerallereerste blog hier, check ‘em zelf, schreef ik mede door inspiratie uit een nummer van de band Becoming the Archetype. “Eternity is black and white, and I’ve been living in between.” Inmiddels bestaat deze band niet meer (in die hoedanigheid), maar zanger Jason Wisdom brengt vandaag zijn nieuwe werk uit onder de bandnaam Death Therapy. Het album heet: The Storm before the Calm (4.5/5 recensie op JFH). De storm verwijst naar de moeilijkheden en tegenslagen in zijn leven terwijl de calm verwijst naar de hoop die hij heeft in Jezus. Op het album staat het nummer Self Mind Dead met, jawel, ‘guest vocals’ van niemand minder dan Project 86 frontman Andrew Schwab (zijn eerst ooit). Let wel: het gehele album is alleen basgitaar, drums en synthesizer.

Over dit nummer zegt zanger Jason Wisdom het volgende:

“Self Mind Dead is a song about the dangers of only listening to people who agree with you. That applies no matter what point of view you are coming from. To live in an echo chamber is an intellectual death sentence and ultimately cripples a person’s character. Christians are often the worst about it, because they feel like they are spiritually obligated to block everything — and everyone — else out. It’s looked at as a virtue, but it just breeds ignorance and undercuts the power and message of the Gospel by portraying it as something that can’t stand up to outside criticism. That’s the exact opposite of how the Christian message should be presented.”
