Jarenlang was Zao één van de meest populaire christelijke metalbands onder het Solid State label. Ze bestaan al sinds 1994 (!). Inmiddels beschouwt Zao zich niet meer als christelijke band. Frontman Scott Mellinger is atheïst, maar verscheen meerdere keren op de Pastor with No Answers Podcast (zie onderdaan). In 2009 bracht hij met Zao het album Awake? (4/5 op JFH) uit.
Na veel jaren van inactiviteit verscheen daar vorig jaar de langverwachte volgende plaat: The Well-Intentioned Virus (4/5 op JFH). Zware metalen en teksten, maar wel teksten die aan het denken zetten. Scott is een welbespraakte man die ook op dit album een goed punt maakt: "As believers we shouldn't be out doing the very things we speak or preach against.". In het nummer Xenophobe gaat het hier ook over, met een sneer naar Trump. De volgende keer weer wat meer ingetogen muziek. Promise.
