Als er toch één album is waar ik al dik tien jaar geregeld naar teruggrijp is dat wel Illusion van Spoken. Alleen al die opener Stand Alone: zó doe je dat. In 2020 deelde ik al eens het nummer Shadow Over Me hier. Analoog aan P.O.D. wist geen van hun latere albums de destijds gelegde lat te halen. Tot nu! Reflection van het gelijknamige, vrij briljante album doet dat. Héérlijke hardrock met scherpe (en harde!) handjes.

Allereerst: Spoken levert met Reflection een album af met 14 nummers en een speelduur van 57 minuten. Een diepe buiging is gepast omdat het album nergens voortsleurt. En bedenkt dat deze kerels al 25 jaar in het vak zitten. De hardrock is soms ronduit metal-ish hard en de catchy zangmelodieën van Matt Baird tillen het album boven ieder standaard (hard)rockalbum uit. En net als Chevelle mij eerder in één keer wist te pakken met gitaarrifs, deed Spoken exact hetzelfde. Dit album ga je zéker terugvinden in mijn eindejaarslijst. Ik krijg er geen genoeg van en kan daar zo blij van worden: een album dat je steeds opnieuw aanzet en je zo jaren later, bij het opnieuw aanzetten, exact terugbrengt naar waar ik nu (mee bezig) ben.
