Dit is er eentje voor de liefhebbers, waaronder ik hoop mijn zwager te scharen. Liefhebber vanuit pure nostalgie tenminste. Het is immers muziek van ruim 20 jaar oud, maar de band Embodyment was haar tijd ver vooruit met het album Embrace the Eternal in 1998. Hoogtepunt is en was altijd dit nummer Religious Infamy geweest omdat - jaja, lachen - dit nummer nog de meeste melodie had.

Door de beugel
Christelijke muziek, maar dan zo hard? En tekstueel niet alleen 'oké, maar gewoon stevig bevestigend in de protestants-christelijke leer. Ouders haalden dat er natuurlijk niet uit ('wat een herrie!'), maar kom er nog maar eens om anno nu. Bands als Convictions en Wolves at the Gate schieten me te binnen. Het belerende hoeft van mij niet zo meer; als tiener was ik veel bezig met of een band wel door de christelijke beugel kon. Dat ligt nu geheel anders omdat je via internet daar sneller een beeld van krijgt al zijn lyrics ook dan over het algemeen (veel) minder expliciet christelijk is mijn waarneming. Vaak is het de muziek, regelmatig is het de tekst en soms is het beide raak. En dit, dit is heerlijk nostalgisch.

Ommekeer
De band Embodyment gooide het muzikale roer na dit debut trouwens flink om. In mijn muziekcollectie heb ik ook album 'Hold your Breath' uit 2001 en je zou nooit kunnen vermoeden dat het één en dezelfde band is. Check er meer over op JFH. Tot slot: dank aan zwager Len die mij met ook Drawing Black Lines van Project 86 en Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance van Tourniquet introduceerde in een subcultuur waar ik mij sindsdien nog heerlijk in begeef (en hij al jááren terug afscheid van nam). Met Embodyment is het drieluik nu compleet.
